Slug Invasion - Visual Style guide

At the moment i am working on a 5 minute short film on my school with 8 other students from my school.I am the Art Director on the project, and it is one of my duties to make the Visual Style Guide. And here it is, the entire thing!
It was fun to create it, and to lay out the rules of the short movies visual look and mood. There are 5 other short movies in production on my school, and most of them have used my style guide as a guideline for how to create there own.

Film Jam - The Outsider

This short was made in 5 days. We were 8 students on this project. Our director Tod Polson did the voice over and came up with a simple but nice idea about having our main character being a claustrofobic person who were uncabable of going inside a building or anything else for that matter.
On the project i was responsable for our naming convention, folder structure, sound, storyboarding and the edeting of the movie. I am satesfied with the visual look of the story and impressed that we were able to make above one minute of film within 5 days.

Project Q - Early Modeling & Displacement

Here on the 1st picture is what i had made in Maya after about 7 days of work. I started making a simple drawing of my character from the side view, then i throw it into Maya and started modeling using edge extrusion.
I started making the face of the creature and then i made the basic body as a saperated geomatry, still using edge extrution. Through out this week i focused allot on modeling as fast as i could, and it went vey well. I have no ngons or triangles and the model is relative light for the computer to handle. I still have to model the jewelery and gold feathers for the character. This second picture shows the displacement map i made using MudBox. It's a 3 subdevition, 2k displacement and it takes mental ray about 20 seconds to render.

Project Q - Design

Here's what I've dared to call my final version of my "Four Legged Creature".
I wanted to illustrate the ancient Aztec god "Xipe Totec" when I started working on this creature.
I knew that the god was sometimes pictured as a giant toad and I thought that it would look awesome to create a old wise toad mixed with the jewelry and symbols of the Aztec people.

Character Design

In this project we had to make a two legged creature (no humans) I had some few different character ideas but after about 4 days i ended up with this final design. By making an alien, my goal was to create a fearsome preditor and try to make all the aliens lims usable as a weappon agenst pray or for defence.

When i had the final dessign (nr. 3) i started on my maquette, i love sculpting and the type of clay we used was very nice and easy to work with compared to what i have used before. But this model was relly a pain to sculpt. As you can emagain, all the spikes on the character came in my way all the time as i was trying to modeled it. But the model was a very nice reference to have as i went on to the computer.

Here is the CG varsion om my character, sculped in MudBox and moddeled in Maya. This was more or less the first time i used MudBox. It was a grate experience to use and learn the program, it relly allowed me to make those nice datails that would have ben nearly imspossible to make in Maya allone.

I made some mistakes in this project that i learned allot from. There where way to many things going on on the character, the 6 arms and all the spiked made the aliens shilluet look very confusing. But i like my little alien for all i have learned from it.
